  16.                STATEMENT OF VICE PRESIDENT AL GORE

  18.      Today's decision by the government of British Columbia to 
  19. designate the Tatshenshini-Alsek region as a permanent provincial 
  20. park protects a region rich in valuable natural resources.  It is 
  21. a critically important decision for this rare and pristine region 
  22. and all its citizens.
  23.      
  24.      North America's wildest river, the Tatshenshini-Alsek, was 
  25. recognized last year by the United Nations as an endangered river 
  26. whose importance deserved international recognition and 
  27. preservation.  The region is rich in natural resources, including 
  28. endangered and unique plant and animal life and fish stocks that 
  29. support a mulit-million dollar industry.

  31.      The Tatshenshini-Alsek River -- all its valuable resources 
  32. and the people who rely on them -- were threatened last year by a 
  33. proposal to build the world's largest open pit copper mine on the 
  34. Tatshenshini Creek watershed in British Columbia, 15 miles from 
  35. the U.S. border.  Many of us in the United States and Canada 
  36. worked to bring attention to the proposed mine, which would have 
  37. caused not only severe environmental damage but also serious 
  38. economic harm to the region, particularly to the fishing 
  39. industry.

  41.      Premier Harcourt acted boldly and with foresight to protect 
  42. and preserve the natural heritage of one of the world's most 
  43. important rivers and magnificent regions, not only for this 
  44. generation, but for all those to come as well.  He deserves 
  45. commendation for his decision.
